Millet |
Millet was born in 1814 and was a
pupil of Paul Delaroche by 1837. For several years he painted mainly idylls in imitation of 18th-century French painters. Later he turned to peasant subjects and won his first great fame at the Salon of 1848. From the following years he was chiefly active at Barbizon and associated with the Barbizon school of landscape painters. His works was influenced by Dutch paintings of the 17th century and by the work of Chardin and on the other hand, was influential to Holland on the early style of Van Gogh. |
