Portrait of a Lady
1470-75 Tempera on panel, 65,7 x 41 cm Victoria and Albert Museum, London If the inscription on the window jamb, possibly dating from the 16th century, is to be believed, this is a portrait of Smeralda Brandini, who was a member of a respected Florentine family. A sign of her rank and respectable status is the handkerchief which she is holding in the hand placed across her body. Portrait of a Young Woman
1475 Tempera on panel, 61 x 40 cm Galleria Palatina (Palazzo Pitti), Florence There are several assumptions concerning the identity of the young woman (Simonetta Vespucci, Clarice Orsini, Fioretta Gorini etc.). The picture was partly repainted. The sleeve of the robe covers the left hand in a very unnatural way. The lock of hair coming loose from her bun gives a more spontaneous feeling to this severe profile portrait. The half length figure is slightly to the left of the centre of the picture. Behind her is a dark window frame and it contrasts with the gentle flow other contours. The attribution of the work to Botticelli is disputed. Portrait of Giuliano de Medici
1475 Tempera on panel, 54 x 36 cm Accademia Carrara, Bergamo Three similar portraits of Giuliano still exist. In contrast to the version in Washington, the portraits that are now in Bergamo and Berlin were probably not created until after Giuliano's assassination during the Pazzi conspiracy in 1478, when copies would have been ordered by friends and relatives as commemorative portraits. Self-portrait
1740s Oil on canvas, 65 x 50,2 cm Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest Meytens's earliest self-portrait, a young painter's portrait with a turban, in the painters' gallery of Florences's Uffizi, was made during his Italian residence in 1727. This was followed in 1735 by a half-figure self-portrait, which can be found in two versions, in Sibiu's Muzeul Brukenthal, and in Ludwigsburg Gallery. The Budapest self-portrait belongs to a later period, and shows a slightly changed, somewhat more corpulent man. His face is still youthfully smooth, but already fattish, and he wears an Allonge-wig. His pose refers to his courtly position and special honours. A gold chain on his breast holds the medal he got in 1730 from Frederic, King of Sweden during his activity in Stockholm, and he ostentatiously shows with his right hand the medallion portrait of Empress Maria Theresia. Another half-figure portrait, now kept in the Viennese Gem?ldegalerie der Akademie der bildenden K?nste, as well as a painting in a Stockholm private collection, show the master some years older and of even more authority. Compared to these portraits and to the one engraved by Johann Gottfried Haid in 1756, our painting can probably be ascribed to the 1740s. Empress Maria Theresa
Oil on canvas Town Hall, Ghent This portrait of the Empress is in the reception salon of the Ghent Town Hall. The dress of Flemish lace that she is wearing was a gift to her from the states of Flanders. The dress was made by Ghent orphans. Out of gratitude for this expensive present, Maria Theresa allowed her portrait to be painted by her court painter, Martin van Meytens, after which the completed work was handed over to the members of the states. Berlin Mabuse painted many portraits. By their rigorous psychological analysis he is surely one of the most talented northern artists to have practised this genre. Usually, he would paint his sitters against a dark background. Artist: GOSSAERT, Jan (Mabuse) Painting Title: Portrait of Baudouin of Burgundy , 1501-1550 Painting Style: Flemish , , portrait

Portrait of a Young Man
1500 Oil on wood, 31 x 26 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence This work, along with the Portrait of a Young Man conserved in the Galleria Capitolina, is recorded in the Inventories of 1753 as a self portrait, and as such it continues to be regarded, even though this supposition lacks any scientific foundation. The portrait is highly distinctive, the face having a mellow, moulded quality accentuated by its halo of soft curls and the round clouds which fill the sky in the background.Artist:BELLINI, Giovanni Title: Portrait of a Young Man Painted in 1451-1500 , Italian - - painting : portrait

The Illegitimate Daughter of Cosimo I de' Medici
1542 Oil on wood, 63 x 48 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence The painting portrays Bia, one of the two illegitimate daughters of Cosimo I, who died in 1542 when she was only five years old. It is one of the loveliest portraits executed by Bronzino for the Medici family. The girl, who wears a medallion with the profile of Cosimo around her neck, is portrayed with an expression of lucid fixity, in perfect accord with the enchanted happiness of childhood, and her very slight smile creates a magical air of suspense. The background, abstract as in many other portraits by Bronzino, is of an almost enamelled lapis lazuli.Artist:BRONZINO, Agnolo Title: Bia, The Illegitimate Daughter of Cosimo I de' Medici Painted in 1501-1550 , Italian - - painting : portrait

Portrait of a Man
1474 Oil on wood, 32 x 26 cm Staatliche Museen, Berlin The painting is one of the portraits which were famed for their realism. Due to his knowledge of Flemish pictures, the painter had made a decisive contribution to the spreading and perfection in Italy of what was at that time the new medium of oil painting, and normally depicted figures in three quarter life-size as statue-like half-length portraits in front of a barrier. As in this portrait, the face is particularly emphasized by the dark background and simple headgear, with the eyes directed straight at the observer.Artist:ANTONELLO da Messina Title: Portrait of a Man Painted in 1451-1500 , Italian - - painting : portrait

Woman Playing a Lute
1520 Oil on panel, 65 x 50 cm Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan The date appears on the paper below the lute: 1520. A replica, perhaps by the artist himself, is in the Gardner Museum, Boston. The woman is represented in the guise of St Cecilia, a typical example of sixteenth-century "court art." In fact the artist worked for three years at Ferrara for Lucrezia Borgia. Bartolomeo's formation derives from Cima da Conegliano and the later work of Bellini, with influences from Leonardo, Costa and northern European art. His signature on a painting that was formerly in the Dona delle Rose collection in Venice shows how aware he was of his mixed development: "Bartolamio half Venetian and half Cremonese." He liked to paint half-figures of women, and chose subjects with strong personalities.Artist:BARTOLOMEO VENETO Title: Woman Playing a Lute Painted in 1501-1550 , Italian - - painting : genre

Portrait of a Man
1504 Oil on panel, 43 x 29 cm Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest D?rer's paintings include altarpieces, religious pictures and some outstanding portraits. Although he began by working in the German late Gothic tradition, D?rer was to introduce the Renaissance to Germany with his pure compositions in which the sure touch of the draughtsman is always evident. With his workshop and followers he marked out the lines of development of the new style for later years. This small picture - a portrait of a youth, painted in brilliant, warm colours - is sometimes ascribed to D?rer's pupils (Hans S?ss von Kulmbach or Hans Baldung Grien). Some scholars believe to recognize in the sitter D?rer's brother Andreas; however the smooth features and simple attire hardly provide enough clues for identifying the sitter. However, a silverpoint drawing by D?rer in the Albertina Collection in Vienna shows the same model in a similar pose, clearly indicated in the inscription as Endres D?rer, the painter's younger brother

Madonna and Child with the Infant St John
1508 Tempera and oil on wood Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest Raphael, perhaps the most popular and widely appreciated master of Renaissance Italy, was a man of many talents. He succeeded Bramante as architect of St Peter's and was surveyor of excavations of the antiquities of Ancient Rome, as well as producing monumental frescoes and outstanding religious compositions and portraits. It is as a painter of Madonnas, however, that he is most widely known, and his unrivalled popularity with succeeding generations has been mainly due to the harmony and beauty of these paintings. He depicted Mary as a heavenly being who was yet flesh and blood: in half-length or full-length pictures she is seen enthroned or floating through the heavens, against a landscape background or in some interior scene, alone with her Child or in the company of saints

Bacchus and Ariadne
1520-25 Marble, height: 56 cm Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna In Venice, during the closing decades of the 15th century, a pure classicising style, derived from Andrea Mantegna, was introduced. Tullio Lombardo turned to classical sculpture proper for his guiding force. His portraits of young couples in high relief (the other is in the Ca' d'Oro in Venice) were inspired by antique funerary busts, but the sculptor completely rejected naturalism. The simplicity of the volumes and the sobriety of expression are set off by decorative refinements which depart from the antique schema. They include embroidered hairnets in the hair and meticulously designed sinuous locks. His Bacchus and Ariadne shows him at his most lyrical, under the influence of the Humanism at the Gonzaga court at Mantua, where he worked for Isabella d'Este in 1523 and 1527
